Discover 5 fascinating facts about our Gem of the Month: Amethyst.

The Remarkable History of February’s Birthstone

Amethyst, with its unmistakable purple hue, is easily recognizable even to those unfamiliar with gems and jewels. Its exquisite color, ranging from delicate rose to enchanting lilac and regal purple, has made it a prized gemstone in fine jewelry for centuries. Since as early as 2000 BCE, amethyst has been associated with religious figures and monarchs, adding to its allure and mystique.

As I'm always on the lookout for inspiration to create personalized statement pieces for my clients, I'm excited to introduce you to Amethyst! This stunning gem of the month is not only stylish but also carries a storied history. If you've never considered incorporating this gem into your wardrobe or jewelry collection, get ready to be blown away by five things you may not know about amethyst. We'll delve into its rich history, symbolism, healing properties, and much more. By the end of this post, you'll understand why amethyst has been loved and cherished by humans for centuries.

1: DID YOU KNOW Amethyst is created INSIDE LAVA?

Talk about grace under pressure! Amethyst is formed when gas bubbles become trapped in boiling lava. The bubbles allow crystals to form inside the cavities created by the bubbles as the lava slowly cools. When there is iron present as well, the signature deep purple color is created. Amethysts are unique because they often grow in giant geodes, which are rocks that may seem plain on the outside but are actually filled with crystal gemstones. In Brazil, some of these geodes are so massive that when opened, an adult can stand inside them!

2: The name Amethyst comes from the Greek word amethystos, meaning “a remedy against drunkenness”!

The ancient Greeks believed that Amethyst was the sacred stone of the wine god Dionysus and that it would literally protect you from drunkenness and hangovers. Hard-partying Greeks would wear amulets made of amethyst and even carved cups from the stone in an effort to avoid the worst effects of alcohol. This might make it the perfect gift for your friend who’s always ready for a Wine-Down Wednesday!

3: We have discovered amethyst jewelry that dates back thousands of years, showcasing its enduring beauty throughout the ages.

Ancient Egyptians wore it for protection from evil as well as for decoration. According to Dr. Kate Lizska, professor of Egyptology at the California State University, San Bernadino.

“Some of the most stunning jewelry from Ancient Egypt is made of amethyst.  Its craftsmanship, opulence, and design epitomize quality in the ancient world”

4: Amethyst jewelry holds a rich royal heritage.

With its association with purple, a color traditionally linked to royalty, it's no surprise that amethyst jewelry boasts an iconic lineage fit for kings and queens. From the legendary Napoleonic Amethyst Parure, a gift from Empress Josephine to Princess Amalia Augusta on her wedding day, to the dazzling Cartier Bib Necklace worn by the Duchess of Windsor (Wallace Simpson), amethyst has always captivated the hearts of royal fashionistas.

5: Despite being an ancient stone, amethysts are a modern marvel, too!

Colored gems are coming back in a BIG way, and young movie stars like Zendaya are rocking amethyst at a variety of red-carpet events. Richly colored gems like amethyst look perfect with pastels like this necklace Zendaya wore to the SAG Awards in 2023. This will continue to be a very trendy look this Spring.
